Our New Writing Unit - Touchstone Texts and Reading like a Writer...

We have begun immersion into our new unit. We will be reading other author's work like a writer and noticing and modelling their techniques!

The last 2 units we learnt how to move through the writing process from brainstorming to publishing when writing a narrative and a piece of non-fiction. In this unit we will be especially emphasizing good techniques and styles of a writer!

On Tuesday, we read 'Hello, Harvest Moon' by Ralph Fletcher. We noticed the wonderful language he uses that makes us go "ooh, aah". We discussed how writers start off with ordinary language and work hard to make it extraordinary. We found so much memorable language in this book, describing the moon.

Then we got to work ourselves! we wrote three ordinary sentences and changed them into memorable language.

These are some examples of what students in our class wrote:

Ordinary language --------------------memorable language

my baby likes to crawl around ------------ My baby is a born explorer

The rain is loud --------------------The rain is scratching the sky, with a drizzling, loud sound

The milk is good------------------------------- The milk tastes gorgeous

cold ---------------------------------------Crisp cool air

My sister is cute -----------------------My sister is adorably cute

It shines -------------------------------It gleams and glows

On Thursday we noticed the word choices that were used in 'My Chinatown'. We each had our own copy of the text and we highlighted words and sentences that we think are wonderful. We discussed that when a writer describes well, we get a real picture in our mind. We then chose 3 memorable phrases that we liked and illustrated them!

We will be carrying on immersing ourselves in techniques and strategies that we can learn from these authors and then we will be beginning a piece of our own...

Library cards...

Our trip to the library is coming up this Monday, 28th of Feb. If you would like your child to be able to borrow a book please send in her library card by Friday. Parents will be responsible for returning the book that was borrowed.

Thank you,
Morah Rivki

Personal Spelling Tests

Starting from this week on Friday we will each be taking a spelling test on words that we have personally misspelled in our writing...
Each child has a 'personal spelling list' which I have taken from misspelled words in their writing. On Thursday they will check off 10 words to learn. On Friday they will test each other on the words and their meanings. If they spell the words correctly, they will highlight the word and not need to be tested on it again. Otherwise it will be included in the next weeks test and they will have a chance to relearn it.

We will still be continuing with 'words their way' - word study and sorts. Spell checks for the sorts will be taken after several sorts together and the tests will be on Mondays.

An Author came to visit us!

Anne Koffsky is an author and illustrator and has written and illustrated more than 20 books!
She came to speak to us and share with us her techniques!

She taught us about the importance of a strong connection between text and picture; Steps of the writing process: stop! think! Get an idea, do research... Very close to what we learn in our own writing workshops!

Thank You!

Our class got a really special gift today! We got a big bag full of wonderful books!

Thanks to all those parents who donated to our class!!! We are very excited to read them!

Ending off Literacy Month - reading our favorite book...

Dear Parents,

Please choose a time that you can come in and read to our class. 10:45 am is our best time - because that's reading time but if you cant make that time, we will be able to fit it in for when its good for you.
The book should be of interest to the whole class, preferably with pictures and should not take longer than 10-15 minutes to read.
I have sent home a letter, in your child's homework folder with a calendar of dates for you to check off a convenient date and time. Please send it back to school tomorrow.

Thank you so much!

Our Trip to Historic Richmond Town

It was a great experience for us walking through the 1800's village, with our tour guide who was dressed to fit the scene! She taught us the whole process 'from fiber to thread' and we all had a chance to practice. In those days, children our age had to do these jobs for real! We tried on the clothes that they used to make in those days and really got a feel for colonial times!

We had a walk around the historic town, but as we had a special program we did not have time to visit the inside of buildings, stores and houses. A lot of us are interested in going back to visit and asked me to let our parents know the address!

On to Earth Science now... Our first Chapter - Water!

'How does water change form?' is the big question of chapter 5. We will be learning all about the importance of water and the water cycle.

On Thursday we made a model of the earth's water - "What if all earth's water would fit in a bottle?"- Where is earths water? We labelled four cups for the four places that fresh water is found on earth: "atmosphere"; "lakes, rivers and streams"; "groundwater"; and "glaciers". We labelled a big bottle "oceans and seas" for the salt water that is found on earth. We then poured water into each cup:

Amount of Water
(total 2200 mL)
Atmosphere
(fresh water)
about
drop
Lakes, rivers, streams
(fresh water)
about 4 drops
Groundwater (fresh water) 13 mL
Icecaps and glaciers
(fresh water)
47 mL
Oceans and seas
(salt water)

2139 mL

We noticed how most of earth's water is found in oceans and seas and is salt water. We inferred why people should use fresh water wisely... because we need fresh water to drink and most of earths water is salt water!

Some really great parent events coming up...

February 17th - 7:30 pm - Our literacy consultant, Myra is coming to speak to parents about literacy, reading to kids and how to choose books. Myra works with the staff in school and she has excellent advice and practical tips on making literacy more meaningful to our kids! Don't miss out on this opportunity to meet her!

Feburary 23rd - 8:30pm - Parenting discussion group for Moms and Dads - "When they don't listen" - how to deal with misbehavior.

Our morning meeting this week...

At this weeks morning meeting we again reflected on the meaning of 'being a good friend' and thought about how we like to be listened to by our friends and how a good friend listens and responds...
we reflected:
  • How I like my friends to listen to me...

  • I like my friends to listen to me when...

  • When my friends listen carefully to me, I feel...

  • When I'm talking I don't like it if my friend...

Social Studies - National parks and National Holidays

We have learnt all about Yellowstone National Park and how it became the first National Park...
We discussed all the special landforms, animals and plants that are there and the geysers that make it famous around the world! We have created together a 'cause and effect' book about the dangers that face bison!

We have learnt about Veterans day - and how it evolved into a day of rememberance for soldiers who fought in WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War. We have worked on the skill of creating and using timelines to show the main sequence of events on a subject. We learned about the Vietnam War memorial and how even though it was a controversial war, Americans needed a place to show respect, honor and appreciate the veterans. We have created our own memorial in our classroom! We are also practicing our 'letter writing' skills by writing a thank-you letter to a veteran!

Science - Completed Unit A Life Science...

We have now completed the four chapters in Unit A - Life Science!!!

We had a test on chapter 4 and on the whole of Unit A. In pairs we reviewed a chapter and created a poster for the class on the main ideas of the chapter:

  • How plants live and grow
  • How do animals live grow and change
  • How are ecosystems different from each other
  • How do animals and their environments interact

The Book Sale

We will be visiting the book sale together with our class on thursday at 11:45 am. Each child will have $10 to spend. Please send in the money by wednesday.

In addition the sale is open every day of the week for parents!

Completing our non-fiction writing...

Wednesday is our deadline for completing our writing piece in best! On wednesday I will be collecting each students writing and on Thursday we will be having a publishing party!

We have learnt so many strategies for non-fiction writing...

  • Writers include diagrams, labels and charts to help the reader understand.

  • Writers include 'extras' in their books, like fun fact pages, 'how to' pages etc

  • Writers plan the layout of their book and how much text and illustration they will have on each page.

  • Writers make their book 'reader friendly' and easy to understand for their reader.

  • Writers write with 'voice' to make their books more interesting.

  • Writers use punctuation purposefully to make their writing more exciting to read.

  • Writers include dedications and acknowledgements to thank and recognize people that made the subject they wrote about meaningful to them.

It's very exciting to see how every student has applied these strategies to their own writing piece!!!

Trips - Month of Feb

15th Feb - Trip to Historic Richmond Town.
There we will be learning about 'colonial America', which ties into our 'My country - USA' social studies unit.
We will be having a special workshop there together with 4th grade called 'Fiber to Thread':
This workshop focuses on pre-industrial textile production as students experience for themselves the stages of making flax into linen thread and sheep's wool into woolen thread. Students always enjoy breaking flax, carding wool, and trying out the drop-spindle. A visit to some of the historic buildings allows them to consider the uses and value of cloth in early American communities."

28th Feb - Trip to Central Library

We will be having our own trip together with 4th grade in honor of 'Literacy Month'. A children's librarian will be teaching us and showing us around the library. Then we will have time to browse and choose books.

Some children already gave me their library cards. Please make sure that your child brings in her library card by the day before the trip. We will be allowing each student to borrow 1- 2 books and we will be keeping the receipts to give you as a record. The parents will be responsible to return the books with their child. Please let me know if you do not want your child to borrow books.
Next week, Morah Ariella will be going to the 'Tal Am' (hebrew program) conference. We will be having the Rebbe from fourth grade- Rabbi Naftoli, teaching us Jewish Studies instead!

Being a Good Friend...

This week we had 2 Morning Meetings!

We had the first one on Monday: We each found a quiet spot to sit in the classroom with a clipboard and paper...We had soft music playing in the background and we wrote a list of things that "I want my friends to...". We found ourselves writing lots of ideas of how we like our friends to behave and treat us.

On Thursday, we again sat with a clipboard, paper, in a quiet spot and with soft music. We discussed how 'Ahavas Yisroel' means treating our friends exactly the same way that we like our friends to behave with us. This time we wrote a list of what it means "to be a good friend..."
